When luxury houses embark on wine

Chapô

This summer 2020, two haute couture houses ventured off the catwalks to come and titillate the palate of wine lovers. The famous brands Dolce & Gabbana and Chanel have signed bottles that are the delight of fashionable evenings. These prestigious wines are born in paradisiacal islands. From Porquerolles to Sicily, let's go to meet island wines with prestigious labels.

Introduction

Chanel: wines with Mediterranean flavors

As we knew, the Chanel house is at the head of great Bordeaux châteaux like Canon, Berliquet (Saint-Emilion) and Rauzan-Ségla (Margaux). However, since October 2019, she has become the owner of Domaine de l'Île in Porquerolles. In this paradisiacal place and on these island lands, she intends to cultivate wines in the sun and in the wind.

At the head of this project, we find the oenologist and agricultural engineer Nicolas Audebert, who has been working on Chanel's wine properties since 2015. This local child has frequented Porquerolles since his childhood. In these 32 hectares of vines, he produces two organic wines (a rosé and a white). The Domaine's press release describes them as follows: "Rosés and Whites are born here between land and sea. Carefully selected, the traditional Mediterranean grape varieties express all the uniqueness and insularity of the place. They bear the stamp of a commitment, that of creating wines with unique southern accents. Wines from which escape the freshness of the spray and the strength of a land of character. "

The bet succeeded since the 2019 harvest has produced bottles on sale since summer 2020. Based on Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault, completed by Tibouren and Mourvèdre, the rosé is airy and lively, its scent suggests the odors of pine trees and sea breeze. It can be found at a price of 19.90 euros per bottle. As for white, it has already packed more than one specialist. Some even speak of great wine. Its current price is around 30 euros per bottle. The label has the class of a great perfume and pays homage to the beauty of the island of Porquerolles.

Dolce & Gabanna, a rosé at the forefront of fashion

In collaboration with the domain of Donnafugata, the Milanese brand managed by Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana gave birth to “Rosa”, a delicate wine with the scent of jasmine. Donnafugata was founded in Sicily in 1983 by the Rallo family. Her name means "The woman on the run". It alludes to Queen Maria Carolina, wife of Ferdinand IV of Bourbon, who fled to seek refuge in Sicily as the Napoleonic troops approached Naples. She settled down exactly where the winery's vineyards are today.

The duo Dolce & Gabanna declares: “We are Italians, we love to eat and taste a good wine such as this Rosa cuvée, born from our collaboration with Donnafugata. For us, it's like tasting the scent of our land, reviewing its colors and feeling its atmosphere ".

Rosa is a very pale pink wine with fruity notes of wild strawberry, peach and bergamot. It is a nectar of great finesse that can be enjoyed chilled as an aperitif and goes wonderfully with fish or a salad. Its refined label is inspired by hand-painted Sicilian carts. This summer 2020, it delighted enthusiasts who snatched it away at the price of around 30 euros per bottle. It is practically impossible to find any during this fall 2020. We will therefore probably have to wait for the next vintage.
